 Ducati Day Daytona
Ducati Day Daytona returned to Daytona International Speedway's "Ducati Island" as Ducati.Net and Ducati North America once again created an extraordinary atmosphere of entertainment, Red Passion and excitement that Ducatisti from around America look forward to every year. In spite of weather that eventually produced downpours, an estimated 6,000 people enjoyed non-stop action as Ducati Island became a world of its own outside the steep banking of Daytona Speedway.
Past, present and future were celebrated in true Ducati style as Island patrons were surrounded by a veritable sea of bikes representing decades of Ducati performance in DDD's first visit by the Ducati Superbike Concorso, the national contest to find the best Ducati Superbikes in America. All entries were pristine specimens and made for some fierce competition. The panel of accomplished judges—Brian Slark (Curator, Barber Museum), Jeff Nash (Advanced Motorsports), Rich Lambrechts (Ducati Historian) had been tasked with some very difficult decisions. After much deliberation, Best in Show and a trip for two to the Ducati factory went to Douglas Frederick and Ann Cederna's ex-Bayliss Factory racer. Crowning the winner of the Desmo Sound-Off Contest was almost as difficult, but this year the deep down sound of a two valve Ducati S2r stood out from the rest and took home the title. The contest kicked off with Guest of Honor Roland Sands on his customized Hypermotard showing the crowd a thing or two about the music of the motor and tire smoke as well! (see photo)
Sexy machinery wasn't limited to the two-wheeled variety. Exotic car enthusiast and collector Nelson Cambata returned with the most over the top display ever. The star of the display was his French Blue and Black Bugatti Veyron, in the center of a stunning multi million dollar lineup that included a Lamborghini Murciélago LP640, Spyker, Ariel Atom, Rolls Royce, and a Bentley Convertible, all 2008 models. Add to that the Ferrari GT2 team entry that stopped by on the way to the Sebring 12 Hours and anybody with a passion for all things fast had plenty to admire.
Models of a different sort took to the stage for the always well received Ducati North America Fashion Show, and with the addition this year of a Hypermotard Stunting exhibition the schedule was jam packed. The day was capped off by Ducati Team racer Larry Pegram on the way to his eventual 848 debut and Daytona 200 podium.
