Pramac Ducati’s Andrea Iannone will be heading to the US a few days early, but he won’t be going directly to the Circuit of the Americas in Texas for next week’s second MotoGP round, instead he’ll spend two days at the Mazda Speedway in Laguna Seca learning the spectacular and difficult California track.

When I arrived at Sydney's impressive Ducati dealership to ride the new Panigale S superbike, there was a long line of freshly-traded 1098 models inside.
I had to concede that these superseded bikes looked absolutely stunning, and quite why anyone would want to turf them out of their garage was completely lost on me. With their trellis frames and underseat exhausts, they had the signature features that have defined Ducati's sportsbikes ever since the Tamburini-penned 916 set the design agenda for the breed 20 years ago.

When we tested the Ducati 1199 Panigale in our October 2012 issue we were critical of the harshness of the suspension.
During the test we rode the bike on a variety of road surfaces, both good and bad, and we found the Panigale to be quite a chore to ride when the surface was rough and potholed, but glorious on the smooth stuff.
After the test was published we received letters from Panigale owners telling us we were off the mark.
With so much adjustability available on the Panigale’s riding modes and suspension we started to think maybe we didn’t have the bike set up as well as it could have been.

The countdown to the start of the 2013 World Superbike championship continues… The season’s opening races are set to get underway this Friday at the Phillip Island circuit in Australia and Team SBK Ducati Alstare and its riders Carlos Checa and Ayrton Badovini are fully prepared for this exciting challenge.
Having completed a series of very useful tests in recent days, the team is busy making final preparations to the new 1199 Panigale bikes ahead of this weekend’s action. Both riders will take the opportunity to rest up over the next two days, with Carlos recuperating from an intestinal problem and Ayrton from a hematoma near the liver that resulted from last week’s crash.

I’d always dreamed of going on a long motorcycle trip without an end-date. Looking back I see I had more than a few opportunities to make it happen, but prudence and responsibility always interfered: college, work, a mortgage, the cable guy coming on the 16th. But everyone eventually hits a moment in their life when the reckless ambitions of their youth begin to turn into adulthood regrets. And when that moment finally came for me, I said, “fuck it”, bought a 2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale S, threw some gear into a backpack, hit the starter button and roared out of Los Angeles. My only plan was to get to the Atlantic prior to turning around....

European Editor Bruno dePrato visits the Bologna factory to watch an 1199 Power Twin come to life!
Ducati allowed me to walk the production line of the 1199 Panigale, arguably the most advanced V-Twin in production today. The assembly line is that of the Desmosedici V-Four, completely refurbished and retooled. If it weren’t for the scent of special sealants and lubricants, the place would pass for a surgical operating theater. When I stepped into it, my mind went back to when I was working at Ducati....
Lots of great photos - quite a contrast to the vintage assembly line video we posted HERE last week. It's a pretty big deal to take photos on the Ducati factory floor so when you see something like this it's something special

Is the new Ducati Panigale competitive or not? The web is filled with worried comments from fans, alarmed by the performances thus far in testing. But Carlos Checa, the man entrusted with the task of developing the new machine, doesn't seem overly concerned.
"I can go into the vacation feeling pretty relaxed - the Spaniard told GPone.com - The rain took away some testing time, but it was still a very positive outing. We came to some good conclusions, identifying the critical areas of the bike's chassis. This time I was able to clearly communicate my ideas to the team, and now it's up to the engineers. I'm highly confident they can find what we are missing. The engine? I'd like it to be more usable, and we lack a little top end power. Jerez isn't a power circuit, but even here we could see that we are lacking a little bit."

Depending on who you talk to, a Ferrari F1 car produces north of 700 hp and weighs 1,411 pounds for a 2:1 or better power-to-weight ratio. By contrast, the Ducati 1199 Panigale S delivers 195 hp and weighs 415 pounds for a comparable 2.1:1 ratio. So, if you want to argue that Ducati's all-new flagship delivers F1 performance for the street, you'd be right.
