Ducati.net recently sat down at with Jake Zemke, rider of the Ducshop Racing 848 EVO. With similar backgrounds and friendships going back years, we couldn’t help but notice the divergence the careers of ex-Honda factory riders, Zemke and Hayden have taken, yet here they are, after all the years, racing again with the same manufacturer (Ducati), something that we’d be willing to bet neither saw coming as a career path. And that is where the similarities stop.

With Fast Frank blasting the 999 out of turn 12 with the rear squirming as the Ducati hammered its horsepower to the ground, the 999’s rear end filling my view slid violently sideways.
Fast Frank Shockley, Julian Taylor from All About Bikes, a Sportbike Track Time weekend, and the two hottest Euro middleweights on the planet wearing brand-new Bridgestone racing slicks. Add in a race-prepped Ducati 999 for on-board camera duties by my film crew from Speed.com and rolling south to Carolina Motorsports Park in South Carolina at the end of last year a mad weekend was clearly in the works.
With Fast Frank blasting the 999 out of turn 12 with the rear squirming as the Ducati hammered its horsepower to the ground, the 999’s rear end filling my view slid violently sideways. The flash of white in front of the Ducati told me Fast Frank was inches from the back of Julian’s rear wheel, and as the wily old fox took a short flight out of the seat, he quickly feathered the throttle and got both wheels back in line. I let go of the breath I was holding and stayed hard on the gas barreling into turn 14. Using the Ducati 848 EVO’s superior brakes, I slid by Frank and slipped in behind Julian, as the Triumph Daytona 675R he was riding scythed through the turn and started the run down to turn one.

So with a big box full of goodies from Ducati, I aimed the trusty rusty four-door south and headed for Fast Frank Shockley’s workshop.
So with a big box full of goodies from Ducati, I aimed the trusty rusty four-door south and headed for Fast Frank Shockley’s workshop. For those who don’t know Frank, he has built, tuned, and raced his air-cooled Ducatis to a couple of Moto ST championships in recent years, and he now builds, tunes, and fabricates parts for racers who want to go fast. He is still an active racer and certainly lives up to his name. Rolling the bike up on the lift, our first order of operation was to take a look at the suspension. As we prepared, Frank told me a lot of people jack the back end of the 848s to help them turn faster, so it was no surprise that he found the rear ride-height adjuster wound all the way out. Lowering the adjuster, he then put it back to a more neutral setting. The idea behind this was that I should just try it like this before we started making any major changes to the suspension, and when we did, we should do it trackside.

The day I picked up the 848 EVO from Motorcycles of Charlotte it was not a bright, sunny start to the long-term relationship we were about to embark on.
The day I picked up the 848 EVO from Motorcycles of Charlotte it was not a bright, sunny start to the long-term relationship we were about to embark on. Sure, from ten paces the Dark Stealth bodywork looked wicked, and the huge inverted fork with the massive Brembo mono-block radial calipers had my mouth watering. But once up close, the bike looked pretty badly neglected. The wheels, swing arm, and forks were encrusted in road grime, and the chain was dry, rusty, and filthy. The Pirelli tires had certainly seen better days, and the rubber on the badly tarnished exhaust pipes said either burnouts or hard track miles. A deeply gouged engine cover that someone had hand-painted the scratches black made it clear it had been dropped at speed, and a few other areas from the bar ends to peg tips confirmed this. In contrast, the tank and bodywork were all brand new, which meant it had been crashed badly enough for them to need replacement.
As I flipped on the ignition, pressed the starter button, and fired the engine to life, the healthy roar of the 140-horsepower, 848cc Testastretta V-twin told me all was well with the heart and soul of the beast, though, and got me eager to jump in the saddle. The oil level was fine and everything appeared to be straight and tight. As delivered, the Ducati had no license plate or paperwork, so with a road test out of the question, I loaded up and headed for home to prepare the 848 for its first track outing.

The 848 grows a bigger pair. We check it out
Cover those two tiny badges, one on the tank and the other on the engine case, and still, the 848 cannot be mistaken for anything but a Ducati! Ducatis have never suffered from an identity crisis, except for the Diavel perhaps, and the 848 is every bit the Ducatisti’s wet dream!...More here: http://www.bsmotoring.com/news/ducati-848-review-evo-teaser/5253/1

It took 24 years, almost a quarter century, but in March of 2011, Jason DiSalvo became the only man besides Cook Neilson to ever stand on the top step of the podium in a Daytona Superbike race by winning the Daytona 200 on a Ducati 848 EVO. Jason, a privateer, as was Neilson, did it with great riding, perseverance and a huge dose of luck no one can deny. He also did it with two motors. And on that day, Jason DiSalvo’s Ducati became one of the two most important Ducati’s in US racing history.
The next morning, over breakfast in a small B&B 20 miles west of the Daytona Speedway winners circle a group of enthusiasts were mulling over the whole incredible story....Read the whole story here: http://www.ducati.net/2012/04/the-retirement-it-deserves/

A Ducati Superbike 848 took center stage as students got a lesson in product and brand positioning.
Students in the Marketing 4082: Brand Management course recently received an unusual visitor--one with an engine and two wheels. Tim Parker, owner of the Ducati motorcycle dealership in Minneapolis rolled in with a shiny, red Ducati Superbike 848 during his visit to share with the class how the Ducati brand sets itself apart both in how the company approaches its product as well as the market.
For students studying the building and managing of brand assets as well as a brands' strengths and weaknesses, Ducati was a prime example of positioning. The Ducati brand benefits from a rich history that helps shape buyers' associations with the brand today.
"The big takeaway for me from the Ducati presentation was the importance of the company's heritage, especially the importance of the family name being associated with the brand," says junior Jon Van Keulen, a double major in marketing and Spanish. "This focus on putting the family name on a product, in Italian culture, seems to be a type of promise of quality and excellence."
The Ducati presentation was purposely aligned with the class' upcoming trip to Italy in May to study Italian brands....more here : http://blog.lib.umn.edu/csomweb/csnews/2012/04/ducati-in-the-classroom.html

(translated from Italian)
Dario Marchetti returns to the Daytona 200, the most prestigious of American motorcycle races, the opener for the national championship series . The pilot of Castel San Pietro 's Italian has the most experience in the Florida Classic, and this year he has everything you need to point to a prominent placement: he will be joining the same team which competed in the U.S. in recent years, Ducshop Atlanta (Georgia), which has bought a Ducati 848 Evo, the latest and most competitive of the twin-cylinder Ducati.
Marchetti is a specialist at the very special Daytona circuit: At Daytona in recent years has won the Battle of the Twins, in the Sound of Thunder, and Endurance in the Race of Champions and has won quite a few podiums. The American race is particularly challenging because the track is very fast, not too favorable to the characteristics of the Ducati, but Marchetti is confident: "The bike is not as powerful as the four-cylinder Japanese deployed by U.S. importers in the semi-official, but compared to last year still has many more horses, and compared to the other has superior driving skills. The track also has a very tortuous and perhaps one that will allow us a few surprises. The rest have to invent it on the banked curves. You make my heart in my throat and who sees Daytona for the first time makes a nice effort, even in one of two Superbike races is eliminated because the dishes are tremendous stresses and the risk of tire burst. But the 200 miles you are running with the Sportbike, Supersport in practice, those curves, and I know them for years and I are pretty good ... ".
In the coming days Marchetti you prepare by doing two days of testing in Rijeka, Croatia, Friday 9 and Saturday 10. Leave for Daytona 13 and will run Saturday, March 17, when in Italy will now night, and contrary to the usually take place only 200 miles. The Americans have indeed moved to another date all races boundary.
At his side, the team will field Ducshop Jake Zemke , one of the most popular U.S. riders won the 200 Miles in 2006, American champion in 2008 and author of over 100 podium finishes.
With the team of Tim Robinson will do the AMA, for him will be the first time on a Ducati after a career on four cylinders.
"We have just concluded two days of testing and for me it was the first time on a Ducati race - he said - I was impressed by the vigorous pull and the effectiveness of the whole. The goal is to put a Ducati there at the top, and you can do. "
