Tooele • Spain’s Carlos Checa and Italy’s Marco Melandri scored victories Monday in two FIM Superbike World Championship races at Miller Motorsports Park.
In Race 1, Checa seized control early and rolled to victory aboard his Ducati 1098R motorcycle for Althea Racing. Checa stalked early leaders Tom Sykes of Great Britain and Melandri for the first six laps before grabbing the lead and gradually pulling away.
Checa’s final margin over Melandri was 2.313 seconds.
Following Checa and Melandri, Max Biaggi of Italy ended up in third place. Jonathan Rea of Great Britain finished fourth and Eugene Laverty of Ireland was fifth....For more: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/54196662-77/checa-fifth-races-britain.html.csp

MotoGP insider Paolo Gozzi of GPOne.com believes SBK is in it’s last year at Miller. It’s well known there are problems with the Miller location and track, which make this round an attendance under performer. They include racing on Monday to avoid religious conflict, disadvantages for TV audiences in the rest of the world who are not on national holiday on Monday, and of course the already mentioned small crowds. In 2008, when the primary goal was to get the series back in North America, a market important to series advertisers, it was possible to overlook these issues. Now that both series have merged ownership, the perspective is different and it makes sense to consider a merge of venues, especially with so many N. American GP race choices.

MMP is where Carlos Checa first flashed his future as a World Superbike superstar. And this weekend's return couldn't come at a better time for the Spaniard.
Who's the master of Miller Motorsports Park?
While Ben Spies has a legitimate claim, like many of the other mythical titles he's in the running for (greatest AMA Superbike rider of all-time, greatest World Superbike rider of all-time, and so on), the Texan is ultimately undone by his lack of longevity.
The nod in this particular case must go to reigning World Superbike Champion Carlos Checa, who has excelled in Salt Lake City like no other place in the world.
The Spaniard's late-career success, highlighted by his dominating march to the '11 crown on the strength of one of the more statistically impressive SBK seasons on record, is fast eroding memories of the Carlos Checa who toiled in the mid-pack throughout the bulk of his career. In a former racing life, Checa was something of the passport poster child -- an example of a beneficiary of an unfair racing business that routinely ate up and spat back out riders with similar credentials but less sponsor-friendly heritages....http://moto-racing.speedtv.com/article/wsbk-can-anyone-stop-millers-raging-bull

Tooele • Reigning World Superbike champion Carlos Checa is fourth in the 2012 season-point total standings.
He’s come to the right place, however, if he wants to start climbing the ladder.

Practice starts Saturday with Superpole qualifying on Sunday. Two 64-mile races will be Monday at noon and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
